What to plant in my Summer garden ?

When it comes to planting ready for summer gardens there are many choices. Whether it is in borders, pots or baskets, below is a guide to a few of the choices you have...

🌷🌷🌷

Dahlias

Dahlias are a showstopper for any summer garden. These vibrant flowers come in an impressive range of colours, from deep purples and reds to soft pinks and sunny yellows. They thrive in warm weather and bloom prolifically from mid-summer through to the first frost. Plant dahlia tubers after the last frost date, spacing them about 60cm apart in full sun. They'll reward you with weeks of stunning blooms perfect for cutting and displaying indoors.

Begonias

Begonias are wonderfully versatile summer performers. Whether you choose fibrous varieties for continuous flowering or tuberous types for larger, more dramatic blooms, begonias add colour and texture to borders and containers alike. They prefer partial shade and consistently moist soil, making them ideal for those trickier spots in your garden. Their foliage is often as attractive as their flowers, adding interest even when they're not in bloom.

Gladioli

Gladioli bring height and elegance to summer displays with their tall spikes of densely packed flowers. Available in nearly every colour imaginable, they're excellent for creating dramatic focal points or cutting for arrangements. Plant corms every two weeks from late spring onwards for a succession of blooms throughout the season. They need full sun and well-draining soil to perform at their best.

Zantedeschia

Zantedeschia, commonly known as arum lilies or calla lilies, offer sophisticated, sculptural blooms that add a touch of elegance to any garden. Their striking spathes come in white, pink, red, and even black varieties. These plants prefer warm conditions and moist soil, thriving in sunny spots or partial shade. They're equally at home in borders or containers, and their long-lasting flowers are prized by florists.

Crocosmia

Crocosmia is a brilliant choice for adding vibrant colour and movement to your summer garden. These striking plants produce arching sprays of small, star-shaped flowers in warm shades of red, orange, and yellow, creating a fiery display that catches the eye from across the garden. They bloom from mid-summer through to early autumn, extending your season of colour well beyond the peak summer months.

Nerine Bowdenii

Nerine Bowdenii and Nerine Bowdenii Alba are stunning late-summer performers that bring exotic elegance to your garden when many other plants are beginning to fade. These South African natives produce delicate, spider-like flowers in shades of pink and White, held on slender stems that sway gracefully in the breeze. They bloom from late August through September, providing a welcome burst of colour as summer transitions into autumn. These bulbs are surprisingly hardy in the UK and thrive in warm, sunny spots with excellent drainage.
