Jobs for December

December is still a great month to plant many Spring Flowering Bulbs. Plant the bulbs as soon as you receive them so they don't deteriorate. Make sure the bulbs are planted at least 6 inches deep. If you live in a cold climate, cover the planting area with mulch.
Use bulbs with different flowering times so your garden will have colour throughout the season. For example, you can plant snowdrops and Scillas first, followed by early flowering tulips, and then late flowering tulips.
If the ground is frozen, you can still plant bulbs in pots and store them in a cold but sheltered area over the winter. In the spring, you can move the pots to your patio or step.
Don't let your garden become a haven for pests. Take the necessary steps to clear the fallen leaves from borders and create a healthier environment for your plants to thrive.
Plant bare-root roses and deciduous shrubs for a rewarding experience next year.
Place Straw around vegetables to prevent the soil freezing. This will help with the harvest of them.
Pruning while shrubs and hedges are dormant offers several advantages. Without leaves on the plant, it's easier to see the structure and shape of the branches, making it simpler to make strategic cuts.
Pests like the red spider mite can quickly multiply in a warm and sheltered environment like a greenhouse, leading to infestations that can damage or even kill your plants. By regularly inspecting your overwintering plants, you can catch pest infestations early and take appropriate action to prevent further damage.
Houseplants can struggle to thrive in the dry environment created by central heating systems during the winter months. Fill a shallow tray with water and place it near your plants. As the water evaporates, it increases the humidity around the plants. Just make sure the bottom of the pots does not sit in the water to avoid root rot. Gently misting your houseplants with water can help increase humidity levels.
Top up bird baths with fresh water every day during frosty weather
